The neighborhood
The 1st arrondissement of Lyon is rich in historical and architectural heritage. This district is home to the city's administration with the Mayor’s office in the City Hall (located at the Terreaux square) and also to cultural landmarks like the Lyon Opera House.
The recent history of this opera house includes the creation of the Opera Orchestra in 1983, which quickly brought together young instrumentalists and experienced section leaders for a mix of classical and contemporary music, featuring renowned directors such as John Eliot Gardiner, Kent Nagano, Louis Langrée, and Iván Fischer.
Place des Terreaux is the key center of this district, housing the City Hall, a large rectangular building with four wings and a central courtyard. The square also hosts monuments like the Saint-Pierre Palace, which replaced the 6th-century St. Pierre Abbey and became the Museum of Fine Arts in 1862. Bartholdi's fountain, featuring the "Char de la Liberté," adds further attraction to this area.
Lyon is also known for its busy shopping streets, such as rue Edouard Herriot and rue de la République, which continue south into the 2nd arrondissement. The Croix-Rousse hill dominates the district, offering additional historical value. It was once home to the silk workers’ workshops, known as the "canuts," and remains a site of significant historical importance, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999.
