The neighborhood

Lyon's 4ᵉ arrondissement, located on the heights of the city, largely corresponds to the emblematic Croix-Rousse district. A former stronghold of the canuts (silk workers), it retains a strong working-class and artistic identity. Nicknamed “the hill that works”, in contrast to Fourvière “the hill that prays”, the Croix-Rousse is known for its steep slopes, its traboules, and its village-in-the-city atmosphere. Today, it's a lively district, blending tradition and modernity, appreciated for its daily market, cafés, craftsmen's workshops and breathtaking views over Lyon.
