The neighborhood

Rich in historical and architectural heritage, the 1st arrondissement of Lyon is home to the city's administration with the Mayor in the City Hall (see the Terreaux district) as well as culture with the Lyon Opera.

The recent history of this Opera includes the creation, ex nihilo, of the Opera Orchestra in 1983, which quickly brought together young instrumentalists and experienced section leaders to alternate between repertoire and creation, lyrical and symphonic. The prestigious names of John Eliot Gardiner, its first music director, Kent Nagano, Louis Langrée, and Iván Fischer have marked the life of this ensemble.

Place des Terreaux is the main center of the district, with the town hall, a building by Simon Maupin from the mid-17th century. It is a large rectangular building with four pavilions and a central courtyard, which had its architecture modified by Jules Hardoin-Mansart, the architect of Versailles. The history of this square is marked by various interesting monuments, such as the Palais Saint-Pierre, which replaced the 6th-century Saint-Pierre Abbey before becoming the Museum of Fine Arts in 1862. The Bartholdi Fountain, designed by the creator of the Statue of Liberty, with the "Char de la Liberté," adds further attraction to the square.

Lyon's life is also marked by major commercial streets such as Rue Edouard Herriot and Rue de la République, which continue south into the 2nd arrondissement.

The Croix Rousse hill dominates the district and adds an interesting historical dimension. The slopes of Croix-Rousse are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. It is also the hill that has long housed the workshops of the canuts and witnessed the struggles of these silk workers, which have shaped the history of labor and union life in Lyon. It is also known as "the hill that works."
