The neighborhood
The 1st arrondissement of Lyon, rich in history and architecture, is home to the city's administration with the Town Hall located in the Terreaux district, as well as cultural institutions like the Lyon Opera House.
The recent history of the opera is marked by the creation, in 1983, of the Lyon Opera Orchestra, which quickly brought together young musicians and experienced section leaders to alternate between classic repertoire and new compositions. Prestigious names such as John Eliot Gardiner, the first music director, Kent Nagano, Louis Langrée, and Iván Fischer have left their mark on the ensemble.
Place des Terreaux is the key landmark of the area, with the Town Hall, built by Simon Maupin in the 17th century. It is a grand rectangular building with four pavilions and a central courtyard, its architecture modified by Jules Hardoin-Mansart, the architect of Versailles. The area is also home to several other historic monuments, including the Palais Saint-Pierre, which became the Museum of Fine Arts in 1862. Bartholdi's fountain, with the "Char de la Liberté," adds further charm to the square.
Lyon’s commercial life is marked by major shopping streets like Rue Edouard Herriot and Rue de la République, which extend south into the 2nd arrondissement.
The Croix-Rousse hill dominates the area, adding an interesting chapter to its history. The slopes of Croix-Rousse are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. This hill has long hosted the workshops of the silk workers, or "canuts," and witnessed their struggles, making it an important site in Lyon’s working-class and union history. It’s also known as "the hill that works."
